About Norm Yip Photography
ABOUT
I was born and raised in Canada by Chinese parents. I received a Bachelor of Arts degree (cum laude) in 1984 at the University of Saskatchewan and a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 1989 at the University of Toronto. In 1994, I moved to Hong Kong where I worked as a project architect for Wong & Tai Associates Ltd and RTKL International Ltd before pursuing my interest in art and photography.
In 1999, I co-founded the organization art collective Meli-Melo Artists Alliance, to which I curated numerous art exhibitions with artists from Canada, Thailand and Hong Kong. Meli Melo was where 'Artjamming' all started.
Eventually in 2001, I formed Norm Yip Photography and set up Studio 8 -- a semi-public photographic and art space located in the district of Sheung Wan -- where I hosted private and selected exhibitions. Since then, I have exhibited in all three mediums of photography, painting and graphite.
My photography has appeared in HK Magazine, WHERE, Global Investor and American Express' Centurion magazine. Celebrities I have photographed include Zhang Yimou, Jennifer Lopez, Ricky Martin, Destiny's Child and Korean pop-star Rain.
My photographs of Asian men been featured in '2Blue' and 'Dreamboys 2', both special edition of Blue magazine, known for it's excellence in fine art male photography.
I have taught photography courses at The Open University of Hong Kong and have been a guest lecturer at Hong Kong Art School. In additional, I have been invited by the Cathay Camera Club to act as judge for in their monthly competitions.
My vision or approach to images are influenced not only by my upbringing in the Canadian plains, but also by my interest in the fine arts, and architecture alike. In the end, I find simplicity in creativity is still the hardest and most rewarding thing to achieve.
